About Us

Welcome to Shropshire Woodcarvers!

Woodcarving is a timeless craft and we’re dedicated to keeping it alive. It’s a wonderful way to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life, giving us all a chance to unwind while making something we can be proud of. It’s not just about carving: it’s about feeling good while doing it!

We’re a friendly group of about 30 people, men and women of all ages and skill levels, who share a passion for woodcarving. Whether you’re a beginner or experienced, we support each other and are all about creating a welcoming, inclusive space for everyone.

We meet at the Shrewsbury Men’s Shed, located at the Shropshire and West Midlands Showground, Berwick Road, Shrewsbury, SY1 2PF (get directions here). You’ll find us there every Thursday evening from 7:00pm to 9:00pm and on the second Saturday of each month from 10:00am to 4:00pm. It’s a great time to carve, chat, and share ideas!

Want to Know More?

If you’re curious and want to give it a go, we offer a free, no-pressure "Introduction to Woodcarving" course. This is a relaxed, beginner-friendly session where we’ll teach you the basics, like using tools safely, selecting wood, and carving techniques. We’ll give you all the materials you need to get started, and we’ll guide you through your first carving project.

The course usually runs over three Thursday evenings (two hours each) or one full Saturday session (six hours). Don’t worry, we go at your own pace, and there’s no rush! Our goal is for you to enjoy the process and the company, and we hope you’ll join us as a member to keep developing your skills.

In the introduction, we’ll cover:

  1. A quick safety overview
  2. Different types of carving: Relief, In-the-Round, Lettering, and Chip
  3. How to choose the right wood and what makes each type special for carving
  4. Essential tools for beginners and how to use them
  5. How to keep your tools sharp
  6. The best ways to hold your wood while carving
  7. Finishing your pieces
  8. Info about our club and membership
  9. A membership form for those who want to continue carving with us

We’ll show you how to hold and use tools properly, how to add perspective to your carvings, and how to finish them off. And please—ask any questions you have! We’re here to help.

Looking forward to carving with you soon and if you have any questions, drop us an email or click the button to the right to send us a message.
